Mayors and Council Members of Wenonah
Wenonah was incorporated within Deptford Township as a Borough Commission in 1883. Dr. George W. Bailey, one of the seven elected commissioners, was selected by the other commissioners to serve as the commission's first president.
In 1896, Wenonah changed to a Borough Council form of government and separated from Deptford Township. The governing body consisted of a mayor and six council members, all elected. The first mayor of Wenonah was Charles M. Wilkins. The first meeting of borough council was on May 9, 1896.
The following is worth noting about the leadership of Wenonah:
*** William J. Dawson served as both president of the borough commission (1891-1892, 1895) and mayor (1899).
*** The following mayors died in office: Dr. Charles H. Lorence and William I. Conway.
*** The office of mayor was vacant in 1960.
*** Jack C. Sheppard, Sr. served as mayor for 24 years.
